Has your street been gritted?

I couldn't believe my eyes when a council gritting lorry chugged up the middle of our hill & sprayed grit onto the ice sheet!

We are not on a main road, nor on a bus route so we'd assumed that we'd just have to wait till it all melted :T

Yes, but I live on a main road so it gets gritted regularly in the icy weather. Something I did see the other night that I haven't seen in years is a proper snow plow. It was a huge heavy lorry with a proper triangle plow on the front and a gritter on the back.
Rhondda Cynon Taf have done a stellar job of keeping the main roads clear this year compared to Cardiff. I went shopping (or tried to) on the weekend and the roads were horrendous, big heaping piles of slush and icy roads that looked like they hadnt been gritted at all, never mind recently and these were the busy A roads running in and out of the city. In contrast as soon as I crossed boundaries back into RCT at Cregiau it was back to lovely dry roads with obvious amounts of pink grit spread on them (and I'm talking country lanes here).
Shame on Cardiff City Council, if RCT can manage to keep on top of things then why cant they?

I live in Briton Ferry near Neath, the main road to Neath has been gritted, but none of the side streets so we have no buses!!The roads and pavements are full of snow and ice, so I am effectively marooned unless I want to risk ending up with broken bones so I am not to impressed with Neath & Port-talbot council.

Caerphilly County Council is my local council, however I don't live in caerphilly. I've not seen a gritter, just local residents digging the street out themselves.

The actual street hasn't but the main road through the estate has (regularly) which is a big improvement on what we had in January. It's easy to knock councils but RCT seemed to have improved their act since the start of the year.

  • I've found the roads in Cardiff to be pretty well gritted throughout this snowy period to be honest! Although I do live relatively near the hospital so I'm probably mainly seeing priority routes. My street is off one of the main roads and hasn't been gritted at all, which is absolutely fine with me; I'd much rather my council tax went on ensuring the major routes/hospitals etc were clear.

What is ridiculous however is the amount of people who have no common sense whatsoever when attempting to control their vehicle in these conditions. During the blizzard conditions last Friday I was walking down Crwys Road into town and SO many drivers were accelerating FAR too fast, then wondering why their vehicle was sliding under them. I've also seen many many people trying to move their car out of spaces without clearing snow from under the car and around the wheels. Idiots.

Interestingly, I do wish the council would not waste grit on footpaths and pedestrianised areas during snowy weather. Queen Street is a ridiculously slushy mess and far more slippery in the gritted areas than it is on the compacted snow. Sensible footwear, sensible speeds and responsibility is all that's needed in the city centre in these conditions!
  • I am just waiting for Feb time, when we do normally get the frost, and snow, will the council's be saying they have run out of money to buy grit....

I live on a side street and we have grit bins, but I doubt there's anything in them. Not even the main roads here are being gritted. Birmingham City Council are s h i t.
