I for one am glad that the tax man has made a mistake, as I now have a nice little bit of cash to go to the sales with. He made the mistake over a number of years, and I knew nothing about it, so I now have money found. Between £600 and £1000. :T. I say I am going to the sales, what I mean is, Her who must be obeyed.

Despite completing the online form a couple of months ago, I've just received a tax rebate cheque which HMRC sent to my old address (thankfully I have a redirect with Royal Mail).

I'm going to ring them on Monday to make sure they have my current address, but my question is: Can I cash the cheque given that it has my old address printed on it?

Provided the name is correct, yes. That is the only thing the bank will be interested in.

Is there any way to check whether I've been owed a tax rebate but haven't received the letter due to the wrong address being on record? I'm a former student who changed addresses yearly and foolishly didn't realise the importance of keeping it updated.

They think everyone has an accountant to help you evade tax, just like they do.
