Thanks - that's kind of what I've told him but he tends to fear the worst! :D Will contact the garage today and try and sort out a car!

You may very well be insured but you should get a severe ticking off/fine/points or whatever for driving without an MOT.

The MOT is there to protect other road users from dangerous vehicles, your vehicle may not be dangerous but its a legal requirement.

I guess on the positive side you wont forget about you MOT again in a hurry ;)

A severe punishment for not having a fresh MOT done 374 days after the last one? When you are allowed to have 365 days before another test?

Thankfully the law in this area will treat it with the severity it deserves a £60 ticket.

Do you think the insurance company will check for a valid MOT as a matter of course?

I have seen an internet poster who had minor damage such as yours, with no MOT, and the insurer asked for MOT as a matter of course, the policy holder told them as they had no reason to require the MOT proof he certainly wasn't going to give it to them. The insurer accepted he didn't have to show his MOT.

The ONLY time the insurers have a valid reason to see the MOT is when the car is written off. Because then it can affect the value of the car.

You could do the same, they don't need the MOT so you just refuse to confirm or deny that it has MOT.

I agree, they only usually ask for documents for total losses, and even then don't always chase them. But of course, insurance companies are always looking for ways to avoid payouts - sorry, "fraudulent claims!!!"

I would suggest that you do not offer the information, but if asked you answer honestly. If and when your car is repaired, then go get a new MOT.

Of course we will get an MOT as soon as we get the car back. It was an oversight in the first place - we are usually very rigorous with all that stuff - insurance, car tax, MOT.
We're getting a courtesy car on Tuesday too as they are very busy at the garage - too busy to let us know the extent of the damage yet!
I am just really hoping the car is ok as I don't want to have to find another!
Also - will we be told the extent of damage to the other drivers car? I wasn't sure .... although I imagine we will.....

Not as a matter of course, though you will if the third party decides to claim directly off you and sends you a copy of the estimate for repairs. (Should you get any correspondence from the third party pass it on to your insurer to deal with)

Thanks - I figured we would need it for future insurance policies - don't they often ask the cost of a claim made? Or is this just the cost for our own vehicle? Or am I talking rubbish? (Often happens ....)

The cost of the third party's claim could well be more than just repairs (eg they can claim other costs - hire car/loss of earnings/compensation for inconvenience etc).

Some insurers do ask if you know the cost of any claims, but don't worry if you don't get notified - tell them the details but you don't know the total cost.

Can they claim car hire costs? When I was hit by another driver we didn't get/ couldn't get a hire car even though we needed one - were we misinformed? I have spoken to the woman whose car I hit and she said she was finding it hard to manage without a car over Christmas ...
