How long does a bank transfer take?

I'm waiting on a payout from my home contents insurance. I was broken into 2 weeks ago, took everything of value plus all the xmas presents I'd bought for everyone. On the up side, he was arrested and admitted to 25  burglaries including mine! Unfortunately my stuff was long gone.

Anyway, they transfered just short of £3000 into my bank last Thursday evening but it still hasn't cleared my end. I thought that bank transfers were either instant or took 2 working days?

I was really hoping it would clear today as I have to do all my christmas shopping from scratch (god help me lol) and I'm starting to panic that it won't clear in time!

Does anyone know how long it could take? I don't know what bank they are transferring from but I'm with Barclays.

    BACS is 3-4 working days.

Do you have a credit card you could use?

Worst case I'm sure your relatives and friends will understand and not want you to get into debt.

My nephew has recently come out and said he's not buying presents because of his debt situation.
Nobody minded in fact we all respected him a great deal for doing that.

My credit rating is carp so I don't do credit cards! My family (I never buy friends!) do understand and I'd already said they may have to wait until after christmas for their presents. My BF has kindly replaced everything I bought my son.

I just hate playing the waiting game, I'm so impatient! I don't know what worse; shopping in the last few days before christmas or shopping in the sales after christmas lol.

Silver lining... if I have to do the shopping after xmas I may get some of the items cheaper! And, thank god I had insurance!
