What speed do you spin your washing?

I've just noticed that our old "on its last legs" washing machine spins at either 1000 rpm and 500 rpm which after googling I realise is quite slow.

When I was living away in the week my landlady's machine spun at 1600 rpm top speed and the programme I washed my "delicates" on spun at 900 rpm. Whereas the delicates prog on my machine spins at 500 rpm so everything comes out that much wetter with the knock on problems that brings this time of the year.

I'm thinking I might just wash delicates (I'm thinking wired bras, acrylic jumpers etc.) on a normal wash and spin them at 1000 rpm but I'm a little concerned about damaging the clothes that way?

Also is it worth double spinning sheets/bedding/towels etc - will this get more water out?

What do others do?

  • Everyday stuff gets spun on 1400, jumper and delicates are 800 and 600 respectively.
I don't have anywhere I can leave seriously wet clothes to drip so I need as much water wrung out of my items as possible.

Not sure if double spinning will get much more water out of your towels TBH. If it doesn't get it out the first time I am not sure it will be any different the second time.

Whatever programme they are put in for washing, ALL my clothes get a 1400 spin before they come out of the machine. Including delicates!

If I had a faster machine, they would be done on the max but as its integrated I couldn't get a higher speed one.

I find if I do this, clothes can go on an airer overnight and be dry in the morning, even in the depths of winter

I spin at 1200 (max my machine does) if stuff is goign in the tumbler (towels/ bedding) and 1000 for stuff that is airing dry (attempt at enegry saving - no idea if it will make a difference)

    Wools get done at 600

  • I spin almost everything on 1400. I have the option on my machine for a short spin and I can select a lower speed for that. If I am using a short spin I usually cut it down to 800. The only time I use it is for delicates that I have hand washed and want to spin some of the water out of.
  • i dont know what speed my machine spins at - its quite old but works very well. however, when the cycle is finished its always still quite wet so i put everything on the 'pump and spin' cycle when the washing cycle is done. works a treat and comes out incredibly dry. hasnt damaged anything so far.xx
  • Most stuff gets spun at 1200 rpm, and comes out just damp really. Delicates at 500 rpm or 800 rpm, so obviously things are wetter when they come out, but I am not going to risk spinning delicate silk and wool at a higher speed. Everything dries pretty quickly on the airer anyway.

  • Everything 1600 rpm.
  • my washing machine is 1000 spin and i spin everything on this, then spin again, but i have also been given a seprate spinner and spin the heavy items in this afer washing and spinning twice in the washing machine, its supriseing how much extra water it gets out, maybe worth you asking on a freecycle site if anyone has one you can

My washing machine spins at 1600 rpm and that's what all the clothes get done on. Makes a huge difference when it comes to getting them dry.

Saying that, I've been surprised at how good the drying is outside on these winter nights, so I've been hanging things out as well :)
