Switching routers

I am having trouble where my internet connection is constantly dropping then re-connecting moments later. I know its router related and not localized to my PC as all the other PC's and consoles in the house have the same problem wirelessly.
I have contacted my internet provider and they suggest I should try another router to the one I bought off them in August.
I do have an old Netgear DG834G but I can't seem to log into it. My provider sent me my log in details but nothing happens when I input them and hit Enter.
BTW, my old router was previously configured to an old internet provider and not been used for a few years!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

isps tell you any old rubbish to get you off the phone, the important figures for a stable sync speed is SNR and attenuation (line length).

    nice graph - http://www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/extreme/performance/

If your router is Thompson, there 575v7 then there have been some updates available from isp's.

"Restoring the Default Configuration and Password
This section explains how to restore the factory default configuration settings, changing the
router’s administration password to password and the IP address to 192.168.0.1. You can erase the
current configuration and restore factory defaults in two ways:
    • Use the Erase function of the Web Configuration Manager (see “Backing Up, Restoring, or
Erasing Your Settings” on page 6-1).
    • Use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router. Use this method for cases when
the administration password or IP address is not known.
    Using the Reset button
To restore the factory default configuration settings without knowing the administration password
or IP address, you must use the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.
    1. Press and hold the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on (about 10 seconds).
    2. Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot."
  • Thanks for your swift and informative reply. I will look into those links given.
    Thanks once again.

The login details your ISP has provided are not the router login - they are the ISP login credentials which you need to enter in the connection settings after you have logged into the router. The kitz frogstats link above will give you the default login information.

What version is your DG834? The new ones are pretty good but the V3 in particular can be very poor on some lines.

Posting up your stats would give me and others a chance to comment on whether or not you seem to have a problem with your line/internal wiring.

you should be able to give the old router a hard reset (usually holfding in reset button for a good 20-30secs does this but check for your specific model) then you can use the default login for that model to access it and input your current ISPs settings from scratch.

Tho once you've tested that i'm sure you'll be looking to eliminate your internal wiring next (basically unplug the faceplate from your 'master' phone socket and use the internal test point), swap over filters and cable and if the problem is still there contact your ISP / BT to investigate the external wiring

netgear default login to the router is:-

    user - admin
    p/word - password

use these to log into the router's config page at 192.168.0.1

then use the ISP logon details in the ADSL setup section (haven't got a netgear handy for the exact menu part) :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

And if the above doesn't work, theres a hole which you shove a pin in to reset it back to factory at which point all the above will work.:D

If they sold it to you 4 months ago, they should replace it for free.

^^^ if you do this ^^^ you'll still need to do what I said to authenticate to your ISP :)
