Are the duplicates likely to have the same name, but be in different folders?

If so, search the WHOLE of your HDD for *.jpg or *.bmp (or whatever pic format you use). Once the search is complete, sort them on filename, and those with the same name will appear together. Show the folders that they're in, and you can pick which one you want to delete.

Visipics will do exactly what you want: http://www.visipics.info/

It searches by 'looking' at each picture and comparing it to the others, so two identically looking pictures could have a different file name and a different file size and it will still spot it as a duplicate.

Right-click on the header line once the search is complete to add the containing folder if it's not there already, and left-click on the filename column to sort on that column.

Several here, I use Duplicate Cleaner to sort work photos which can come from various sources including already backed up.

    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Another vote for Visipics with one caveat, it can run out of memory if you are doing a mega comparison.

A side issue but you mean hard disk space not memory.

In the older 2008/9 version there was an issue with memory leak as I remember [ no idea on the current versions ] so, no, I think he means what he says memory not HDD. All of this type of DUP prog grow memory exponentially, especially if they display the image whilst processing the DUP.

Clearly a ' clanky ' DELL with two bars of 256 will do less well than a quad core on 16GiG, but both will suffer the same. By the time checksums have been generated / processed, thumbnails created etc its extremely processor / memory intensive.

Version of what? I still think they mean HDD space...

Think away my friend, irrelevant .. .. unless the O/P comes back with clarification. I answered the question the O/P asked on memory. You of course .. .. answered a question not asked on HDD space, oh ! and by the way I am sure you know exactly what I was referring to.

The issue of memory using a DUP tool I have answered. Your answer if the O/P is reading this is I have seen hundreds of machines where the photo DUP's tie up hundreds or more times the disk space needed if the DUP's are removed / and / running a DUP on a HDD needs three times the available HDD space to do its work, example 1Gig of photo's needs three GiG of HDD space to complete it's work.

Its not so bad now but ACDSEE used to be the biggest fattest pig on the planet that splattered so much stuff anywhere and everywhere it was quite uncontrollable.

Also for the O/P .. .. here is a lecture I've given thousands of times over the years, the responsibility is yours.

    - if you don't do it right the very first day you copy to your HDD you will be in the mire every subsequent other time, forever onwards
    - just use the [ numerical ] date - followed by any form of words you feel fit
    - always copy to and work in [ the same named ] a temp, when finished zap the temp
