  • chippy, you have made the first move in realising that the world doesnt owe you a living but you are in danger if drifting along, following everyone else until you possibly wake up in your forties and realise life passed you by and now in debt...possibly...

Good news! you are young and have the rest of your life to make a difference to yourself, you may not be able to afford a posh car/house etc now but if you start a plan now then in tine you will get what you want.

there are people out there infinitely worse off, no home, family, friends, no health or prospects and look further afield to other countries and see people with no fresh water and have to sell their kids etc.. I could go on but suffice to say its all relative.

Welcome to the real world! You could try to make a difference by being a person that turns their back on all the consumerism and become a monk, nurse, teacher, take in homeless (take your pick of any philanthropic occupation) but will you? What are you saying? You dont like the system because you cant afford to be at the top of it?

    Good luck mate

At least you are brave enough to admit the young have it harder these days, I am only 27 and glad I am not 19, I had it bad and they now have it worse.

    I didn't quite admit that.

I'd rather be 19 than 43 and I'd rather be 19 now than 1986. Now's a better place to be.

Being young is always tough but we all grow out of it.

I agree with this and i'm not 30 yet. :rotfl:Think the difference is I have past the whining stage came to the conclusion if I want a luxury item then I have to either pay the price asked for it or decide it's not actually worth it and use an alternative.

Oh I remember the days when £15 of unleaded gave me a full tank in my mazda, now its closer £70, car tax was £110 a year, now it's £230 oh and i could slip my mum £15 a week and there would always be food I liked to eat in the fridge and my clothes would mysteriously levetate from a dirty heap on the floor to being clean ironed and sitting on my bed. Busfare into town used to be 35p with my uni ID as well. :rotfl:

No one is "putting their life on hold" if they don't drive. It's a modern day convenience. You don't like the cost of it? Don't do it.

Driving is a modern necessity and insurance as it stands is leeching off that fact.

As for the OP, I'd suggest some time living in one of the remaining communist countries to see how well that works for you. Interestingly, just this week I was chatting to a lady from Poland that I work with about what life was like under communism. She remembers it well. Especially parts such as her parents having to trade away her ration cards for sweets to get extra meat for the family. Oh and the part where utilities only worked during certain hours of the day. Sounds utopian to me. Everyone had the bare essentials. It was difficult for people to attain much more than that.

I had some involvement with samizdat activists back when the Curtain was indeed Iron. One of 'em told me a joke that was then doing the rounds in Moscow. It went like this:

It's the 100th anniversary of the USSR and a little boy is sitting on his grandfather's knee. The old man is reminiscing about how difficult it was to begin with, but that as time went by, Communism proved itself to be the people's saviour. The old man said:

"You weren't born then, but I can tell you, there were times when it was a real struggle to cope. For example, you had to queue and queue for everything, even for the smallest amount of butter."

"What's a queue?" the little boy asked.

"It's where people had to stand in line for hours, just to get anything from a shop." The old man smiles. "Any other questions?"

"Yes," says his grandson. "What's butter?"

Wow can't believe how many people have replied in the last few days. Look all I'm saying is = Capitalism makes people rich however, it's like a see/saw. The richer you get, the poorer some else is.
There are some people out there that would rob granny's all day if it was legal just to be rich. It's shocking how greedy people are!

We're all put on this earth, however, some of us are disadvantaged than others (ill health etc).
If someone is born ill or disabled it isn't their fault. They can't do anything about it but they shouldn't suffer in poverty because of it. I believe the state should provide a free carer for everyone that needs help.
WE NEED TO RAISE THE STANDARD OF LIVING FOR EVERYONE EQUALLY ON A GLOBAL SCALE!
I would gladfully take a decrease in my standard of living knowing that I've made people's lives better in India or Africa. Why is everyone so selfish?

Capitalism isn't going to work forever.

WE AR CONSUMING SOMETHING LIKE 1 AND A HALF EARTH'S WORTH OF RESOURCES!
The oil has peaked and will probably run out in another 50 years, then what!
And what about the rise in global population?
I don't think anyone should be allowed to have more than 2 children, it's getting out of control. You should get family credits for your first two kids but the 3rd you should be fined for.
WE CAN'T KEEP LIVING HE WAY WE ARE CURENTLY! THIS GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS IS JUST THE BEGGINING!
