Problem with Letting Agents showing ppl round

I dont know where I stand with this, we are soon to be moving from our rented accomodation, but there is a prob, the Letting agents (LA) phoned me on thurs saying they had made a viewing for the house, and would i be in (i am off sick with a back problem) and said i would. The LA turned up 30 mins earlier than the time i was advised of and just let himself in.... no knock no nothing.... or he would of done if the chain wasnt on.... its a good job it was as i was in the shower!!!

Surely they knew i was in an should have knocked....??????

Also they made a viewing for sat at 3 ish..... we were going to a bonfire in Ripley about 1.30hrs away so were out. No problem, got home at about midnight, the back door which i check always before i go to bed, was ajar and obv also hadnt been locked..... Who is to say the people viewing werent a bit "dodgy" noticed the LA hadnt locked the door and come back later thru the back and nicked all our stuff..... and cuz the door wasnt locked our insurance would prob be invalid?!

I AM SOOOOOO MAD, going to tell them they cant show people around unless we are in now, also calling landlord, but its our stuff at the end of the day and we are being reasonable, letting them come round whenever as long as we are in from now on.

SORRY FOR THE RANT BUT IM SOOOOOO

Think you're absolutely right. There's no reason why the letting agent can't be respectful - it costs nothing, after all

    Hi Sally,
We had this exact problem when we use to rent, but instead it was with the landlord, we prefered to have viewings while we were there aswell, basically i know this is going to extremes big time, what we done was basically set the camera pointin at the door in the living room and set the dvd on record till we were back to turn it off and enjoy watchin it with a nice hot cuppa, we done this each time since we gave our notice in as landlord wanted to bring people to view house when we werent gonna be there, i dunno why she couldnt just ask rather than do it behind our back.. we didnt trust her after we caught her a few times with the second lock on the door always bein unlocked as we always LOCK it cos of insurance etc so we took these measures, we also use to put some "traps" and on a few occasions they were not how we left it, and it definatly wasnt us as im the first to get in then oh.. soooooo in the end i confronted her and told her exactly what i thougt of the whole situtaion... things did change, so maybe worth speakin to landlord could help things but it is very annoyin so totally understand where u are commin from good luck HTH..

We're just starting to buy our first house, we live in rented accommodation too and aren't looking forward to people coming round to look at it - it was empty when we came to look at it which means you can have a proper look around. Luckily OH has flexibility in his work so could have some 'work from home' time if people wanted to come round during the day.

  • I have to say that I do feel for you and agree where you're coming from.

I am speaking from a Letting Agents perspective. We try to work closely with all of our tenants and try to be impartial and offer a fair service to both landlords and tenants, which I like to think puts in good stead with new tenants coming in from recommendations from other tenants.

As a tenant you have the right to 'Quiet peaceful enjoyment of your home'. In your scenario, even if you gave us your permission to enter with keys, we would always knock first to double check. Also my routine after is always to double check every window / door, even if I am running late, I take the view 'If it were me...'. I woudl also in your opinion make a fuss about the door situation as it is not acceptable, as potentially it coudl have involidated your insurance, etc

I always find that if you are sensible and reasonable with tenants you get the same back so it pays dividends in the long run, it's a two way process.
