Should we switch to British Gas?

Hi there,

Me and my partner currently receive dual fuel through Southern Electric, we are paying £20 a month for Gas and £15 for Electricity via direct debit and it's fair to say that most months, we are in credit.

Now, the other day we had a lady from British Gas knock on our door, she said that she could match the prices we currently pay and as an added incentive if we stay with them for the full year we will receive £125 credit at the start of the second year.

Does this seem like value for money?

I've put our usage totals for the past year (we've lived here for 18 months) into one of those comparison sites and British Gas is showing as one of the most expensive.

So the way I see it is this, even though we would theoretically be paying the same the price, their prices for gas and electricity are greater so we would end up worse off, even with the £125 credit after year one.

Is this right or am I looking at it the wrong way?

For those who care (and if it is of any use) gas usage for our first year here was 4572 standard and 444 discounted.

Electricity 1028 night energy, 551 standard day and 116 discounted day.

Many Thanks for your help.

Don't trust anyone who touts for business. Go with the comparison site. Often they promise all sorts on the door step and it never materialises.
  • you are such a low user BG would not be worth changing to even with the credit at the start of year 2, for your consumption, possibly only npower would be of any value to you to make a move to, but the service is questionable, whereas sse generally speaking, has good service
  • Given that the person was working door to door there is a 99.8% chance they were lying. Given the comparison I'm now 100% confident they were lying. Only YOU can decide what is best. If you identify a saving based on your consumption then that should be genuine, anyone else contacting you without being prompted has thier commission in mind not what is best for you.

  • Thank you all for your advice and help.

I'm going to ring BG now and cancel the switch, in all fairness SSE have been pretty good thus far.

    Thanks!
