Heating kitchen with oven

OH and I have been cutting down on the heating a lot. He's now starting heating the kitchen by putting the oven on with the door open in the mornings. (I suspect that psychologically he thinks that because he isn't using the portable heaters, it somehow doesn't count.) When I talked to him about it, he reckons it's just as efficient (in terms of energy) to use either.

Instinctively, I feel this at least might not be true but I can't find anything on the net to help me back it up. The heaters are 240V 900-1100W, if that means anything.

Can anyone help?

If I have been cooking and using the oven I leave it open to let residual heat out - but putting it on for the purpose of heating ???? not sure that it would be economical. The cooker too would be having to work very hard to try and reach its temperature - it isnt built for leaving door open!!

Tell him to wear a pair of slippers and serve you your breakfast in bed. Even cheaper.

Yes, but would it be working harder than the heater?

AL1x, no idea what the wattage of the oven is and don't know how to find out. I've been told elsewhere that 2000W is standard.

Sorry all for the double post. I kept getting error messages when trying to post and couldn't see my post anywhere so kept retrying. You're lucky you only got it twice!

Does sound a little odd, I've avoided needing the heating on so far but have popped a bit of warmth in the place early on treating myself to a few grilled bits of bacon/sausages and toast of a morning and leaving the oven on / having the toaster throw out a bit of extra heat.... same trick works popping the dishwasher wide open at the end of its cycle.

Overall the oven I'm sure won't be any more efficient than the heaters.... then again I can't see it being any less efficient either -tho being positioned against a wall is some heat leaking out the back/sides/in a less than useful direction?

I assume it is an electric oven, not gas!

Actually it makes absolutely no difference in costs so your OH is correct in one way.

All electrical heating is 100% efficient at turning electricity into heat(warmth) Heat can be measured un BTu(British Thermal units).

So, say, electricity costing you 20p will produce exactly the same amount of warmth(BTu) regardless of using electrical heaters or the oven!

HOWEVER, ovens are not designed to distribute heat around a room like stand alone heaters. So much of the heat will be absorbed by the oven and surrounds so it will not be so effective at getting someone warm. Eventually the heat 'stored' in the oven and surrounds will be released into the room and the net effect is the same.

So use heaters not the oven!!!

It's not gas so no worries there!

Thank you very much for your analysis.
