Firstly, I have no problem with Burns or James Wellbeloved. Personally, I feel Proplan has a more consistent quality to it and a better choice to suit the varied needs of the worlds most diverse species. Their large breed foods seem to suit very well. If you fed any of these foods, your dog would probably do just fine.
This is my personal opinion based on seeing hundreds of dogs each month, fed on a variety of foods, some with the usual digestive upsets. I do tend to recommend Proplan, Royal Canin, Burns, James Wellbeloved equally and Wafcol can be a useful range. The advantage with Burns, Wafcol & JWB over Proplan is the unusual ingredients are very helpful in allergy / intolerance cases. I can think of dogs that are sensitive to just about any ingredient you can name. It is amazing how many dogs cant eat chicken and rice yet we give that to dogs who have diarrhoea!
Palatability also has to have a place and Proplan has been the most palatable I have seen, followed by James Wellbeloved. Dogs & cats just seem to like it. The other consideration is not the cost of the bag but cost per day and when you use recommended feeding amounts to work out daily cost, I have found the more expensive brands in general to work out cheaper than the supermarket brands.
The final thing to consider is availability. It is all very well using a niche food but if you have to rely on the internet (recent delivery problems with the snow) or drive 20 miles to one pet shop, then it is not a good food if you run out. Each week I will see 2 - 3 cases of diarrhoea in dogs fed a different food, either deliberately as a change or accidentally as they ran out.

Thank you, she seems to be enjoying the purina and stools seem pretty normal so although opinions seem mixed I'll leave her be for now.0
