Thank you all! Have just rigged up hairdryer and extension lead over the elbow and the water is running again. Bit tricky to know how to insulate it. have just wedged an old car sponge over and around it and covered the lot with a thick old towel for now. Any suggestions? Will leaving the tap running slightly at night (waste I know, but not on a water meter) help prevent it happening again tonight?

    Thanks again.

DON'T my downstairs tap drips, it froze and blocked the waste pipe outside from the sink to the drain.

Might be worth digging down into the earth around the pipe (very carefully, you don't want to hit it and cause damage!) and continuing the lagging about 6" below ground level, then backfilling the hole with the earth.

Ground might be a tad hard for digging at present. :D

Bubble wrap should do the trick for now. I'm from the Alps and that's what I remember my grandparents using to protect stuff in winter. If you have access to some fallen leaves (probably a bit late for that though!) or straw, pack some in between the layers of bubble wrap.
