student books

Options
If anyone knows of any websites where it is possible to buy cheaper/2nd hand textbooks it would be much appreciated!

I cannot believe how much it is going to cost me just for books to last for 3/4 months!!

i've got a few links in my student handbook - but thats at uni and im at home at the mo - shall post them when i go back

other advice - take advantage of the library. go there as soon as you get your reading list, get the books and have a good look through them. the thing you often find with reading lists is that half the books on there will be no good for you - too deep/not deep enough/difficult style etc etc. the ones you like and will REALLY use, fine buy them, but as for the others, just make notes from them or photocopy the sections you need.

also, dont forgot that the city/town should have its own library - as will your home town. make use of these too.

look out for posters on noticeboards - students in the years above are often flogging their books to raise a bit of cash

cheap/charity/second hand bookshops. you'd be amazed at the treasures that turn up in these places. even if they aren't specifically the ones you need, you find some great books for reading around your subject. a little knowledge can go a long way

dont forget places like waterstones/amazons/boarders etc. shop arond for the best deal you can get, dont forget to check on the vouchers forum to see if there are any money off codes/coupons, and ask for student discount. it all helps.

This website http://www.scrounge.it/ searches a number of websites so at least finds the cheapest new one avilable on the net. Try ebay too, I got a new addition of a book I needed for a £!

IMHO http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchEntry is easily the best for getting cheap and second hand books on the www.

http://www.bookfinder.com/ also has some second hand books

    http://www.ablibris.com/site/home.php3 has some e-books

and http://www.123pricecheck.com/ will compare the prices of new books.

  • I would certainly second abebooks.co.uk or .com - even with the additional postage costs from the US the books have worked out considerably cheaper for me.

https://www.smellystudent.co.uk sells books for £13.50 each, ive had a couple of books from them which were meant to be £40. True, they were labelled as only to be sold in some far eastern countries, but thats their problem, not mine!
