In the green corner, Munir Brothers of Blackheath:

And in the orange corner, Sainsburys of Blackheath (just up the road):

1 x 5kg bag of Tilda Basmati Rice @ Sainsburys £14.49
1 x 5kg bag of Tilda Basmati Rice @ Munir Brothers £7.99
500g Bag of semolina @ Sainsburys 60-70p
1.5 kg bag of semolina @ Munir Brothers £1.36
Its also posible to walk out of MB with bags of fruit and veg and still have change out of a tenner! And there was me thinking supermarkets *were* cheap!

I go to a organic market which is seen as very Yuppie the meat is cheaper than sainsburys. People just believe the supermarket is cheaper. Mad!My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

I think there is an organic place relatively close to me. I must go and have a look some time. Especially if its cheaper!SIMPLE SIMON - Met a pie man going to the fair. Said Simple Simon to the pie man, "What have you got there?" Said the pie man unto Simon, "Pies, you simpleton!"0 -

If you added the tonnage of all the basmati rice produced in the world - it would be considerably less than the tonnage of the rice claimed to be basmati in the world!
Tilda Basmati IS Basmati. At their handling plant in Tilbury, every individual grain of rice is sorted to insure that only whole grains end up as Tilda, Non whole, unsorted grains end up else where. That is what you pay extra for.
If you ever come across rice which is reduced because it is nearing its sell by date - Buy it - Rice gets better with age; In Asia they buy and store rice like Wine; There is no such thing as a use by date for rice. (howver very old rice > 5yrs old gets brittle, and can get mushy if cooked too much!)
Netto were recently selling Basmati at 49p/Kilo - This was excellent value;
Lidl have got 10K for £5.99 but I haven't tried it - any one out there tried it?

I don't work for Tilda, I am just a sad git!!Nil illigitami carborundum... :A0 -

Yeah, it was, i think the 1kg normally retails for £2.49 per pack, and 10kg for £14.49
in my opinion TILDA basmati is the leading brand for basmati rice. i use basmati rice practically everyday. we would normally buy a 20 kilo stock at £24-26 depending on availablity, TILDA brand, £22 for 20kg ofTILDA basmati is the cheapest i've ever been able to buy, and believe me i shop around!
i recently bought 10k AKASH basmati for £5, whilst that's cheap and still good for everyday use, at any given opportunity and also for special occasions, as a cook i would ALWAYS use TILDA. The quality is amazing.
PM me if you're unsure as to how to cook basmati rice, i will gladly advise you, simply boiling the rice and serving is not acceptable by my standards!!!Everything in life is a paradox.
