Inacurate delivery information.

I bid on and won a moped on ebay over the weekend, from a dealer seller. They stated that it could be delivered to England and Wales, with some areas costing a higher amount. As I live on IOW I automatically assumed I would have to pay a higher price, but checked the advert carefully and nowhere did it state that IOW was excluded from delivery, so I decided to go for it. I tried to contact the dealer before committing to buy this item, but they didn't reply to my question or answer the phone, and the item was too good a price to risk losing it.

This morning I called them to pay for it and they said they won't deliver it here. At present I am hunting for a courier who can collect and deliver it for me, but wondered what the actual position is for the dealer involved.

I know that if I backed out of the sale I would expect negative feedback, but it seems to me they are doing the same and that doesn't seem right.

Mant thanks for any info.

Have you tried Shipley. May be an idea. Couriers compete to give you the lowest price to deliver items.

  • As a buyer you can not receive negative feedback, only possitive. But you can give negative.

Also , you can always email them. As a seller i would be fine if winning bidder told me quickly so that i can sell to second bidder before they find something else. Seller can only say no.

Thanks for this, just done it. Fingers crossed - I really don't want to lose the moped!

I have no desire to back out - I want the scooter - but the seller's advert was wrong and they cannot provide the stated service.

OP did try both emailing and phoning.

OP - sometimes it's better, if you can't get a straight answer out of someone, not to jump in head first regardless. It's easier on a seller if you make absolutely sure that you can get the item to yourself - the snow won't be helping at all if they are affected, though knowing the IOW and its climate, it's probably not hit you so bad - but there's really been difficulties anyway and it's safest possibly to assume that if it's not explicitly stated and you know you might have a problem, to get it elsewhere.

It's not necessarily unreasonable to feel that the seller is ignoring you - eBay emails are a bit glitchy at times, but I wish some sellers would get into the habit of answering the phone if they have one as it does help enormously in this kind of situation - but it does mean that you are in a situation you would otherwise not be in if you'd made sure that it could be feasibly delivered to you. You know you sometimes have a problem - so why turn that back on the seller?

I hope you can get the scooter and I hope that the communication problem is solved. I know I stick up for buyers but I wouldn't buy an item myself without knowing I could get it sorted. As a seller I like to feel I communicate with the buyer, and I certainly wouldn't leave emails unanswered, but it's important not to bid if you can't communicate with someone and to try and communicate beforehand if you think it's likely there will be an issue.

Glad i was hopefully of some help. You should get quotes in quite quickly. Hope you manage to get it.

And i totally understand you bidding even though you could not contact seller. Sometimes things are too good to miss!

I am in no hurry at all, sometime in the new year would be fine, I don't expect it before Xmas etc. But talking to the dealer this morning, they actually have less snow than us!

It's not necessarily unreasonable to feel that the seller is ignoring you I don't feel ignored, but I found the item Sat evening and it was ending yesterday- eBay emails are a bit glitchy at times, but I wish some sellers would get into the habit of answering the phone if they have one as it does help enormously in this kind of situation - but it does mean that you are in a situation you would otherwise not be in if you'd made sure that it could be feasibly delivered to you. You know you sometimes have a problem - so why turn that back on the seller? I checked their advert carefully, as IOW was not mentioned as excluded from delivery, I assumed it would fall into the more expensive category. The ad stated Delivery is available for £70 within England & Wales Only. (Excludes Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Lancashire, North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cornwall)

Please note that delivery to the excluded areas is still available with quotations available on request.
None of this implies that a part of England is excluded - it states England not Mainland.

I hope you can get the scooter and I hope that the communication problem is solved. I know I stick up for buyers but I wouldn't buy an item myself without knowing I could get it sorted. I had no reason to believe it would be an issue, they said they can delived to England, which is where I am.[/QUOTE]

Just to clarify, there was nothing in the ad that suggested they would not provide the service they offered.

Do you have someone on the mainland you can get it delivered to & you collect it.

The problem is I cannot yet ride it! (was due to have a lesson Sat but was cancelled due to 'snow') But it could be a solution of they can give me an accurate delivery time and I can meet them at the ferry terminal in Portsmouth. Will see if I get any decent quotes first then call them later.
