i had a meter changed on 13th dec .. i am on prepayment. The engineer couldn't transfer the details to the new meter so he said to ring British gas and ask for a new card meantime he put on £10 emergency .. so the card arrived thurs .. put in meter card not recognized or card fail so on the phone again sending new card out again came sat .. same thing .. so i rang again sending another card out .. so the emergency credit run out yesterday at 11.30 am rang British gas they will send a engineer out to sort it ... so nearly 24 hours later still no engineer rang British gas .. they have no idea how long before the engineer will call .. its minus 8 outside and around 13c in here.. i have a 74 year mum who is disabled and starting to feel cold so she is now in bed wrapped up.. i am sitting typing this with my hat and gloves trying to keep warm..We have no other means of heating or hot water..

could i ask British gas for compensation for no gas supply..??

When you say 'card didnt work' what exactly happened. I think the card has to be paired with the meter (inserted for 30 seconds) before you purchase any credit. You can get a card from your local outlet but I think there may be a charge for this but you will have to visit the outlet twice, once to get card and then once to get get credit once you have paired card with meter.

  • i put the new card in for 30 secs so it can be paired .. but it says card fail or card not recognized and bleeps .. My mums carer just got a new card from the co-op now free it does the same thing.. so that is now 3 cards not working .. so it must be a meter fault
  • Its A 4 Hour call out for that problem get on the phone you should get some compensation
  • i got promised 4 hours when i rang at noon yesterday and again at 6pm .. but due to the lack of engineers and bad weather .. i am on the to do list of the enginner.. its now dropped to 12c in here now and is -5 outside
  • Ring Consumer Direct (08454 04 05 06) and you should get put through to Consumer Focus who can then help.
  • still no engineer .. 3pm .. will make a call to consumer direct .
  • well i gave them a call . They said they would ring british gas but due to the lack of engineers and bad weather also the amout of calls .. i would just have to wait.
  • you have my sympathy, BG left me with no gas for 2 weeks while they faffed about when I moved into a property with prepayment. I used electric heaters and boiled water in the kettle till they sorted it!!!

I have since moved back to Eon!

Many hundreds of customers have been going off supply daily due to the weather. This has been causing meters ( usually gas ) to break down and also cards sent by post after a meter exchange arriving much later than usual.

If the Engineer did not manage to transfer the info from the old to new meter you cannot pick up a free card from the Paypoint. It needs to be sent out. It is not good that this card did not work so hopefully the latest one will work.

As many meter operators are currently not giving timescales due to the weather and you rang at the the weekend this increased the problem. No compensation is due in this situation.

If no one has called by morning you can call and get it booked with the Meter reading agency who can put credit on the meters during the week. They can then cancel the job with the Engineer. Although the Meter readers are sometimes taking longer than usual most have been coming out within a few hours today.
