A solicitor would be happy to send such a letter ....for the appropriate fee.
Whether it has any effect, and what happens afterwards, is another thing.0

Yeah, a solicitor will carry out your legal instruction but do you want to spend £250 on one letter?
If so...go for it!Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0

Without knowing the situation, this advice may not work, but can you turn the situation round on them? If it's appropriate, say something to people like this - I'm getting quite worried about XXX, do you think he/she's alright? He/she's going round saying all kinds of stuff. Someone told me he/she said such-and-such about me. Has he/she been saying anything about you?
If you are willing to repeat what has been said, it deflates it. After all, you wouldn't repeat it if it was true, would you? It also gets people wondering if the scandal-monger is saying anything about them and that reduces any trust or belief they might have in that person.0

Why does it matter what this relative has said? Surely the fact that you know the truth is what matters?
I really don't see how a solicitor will actually help!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0

Great idea! TBH i would try this if at all possible. Also,if its really bad stuff then i would be asking them to expalin their comments as you are concerned that they think you are capable of such things, expalin it isnt true and any more comments and you will be instructing a solicitor..may just work?0

Its a difficult one. I have sent letter's out on behalf of client's where the other person is making inappropriate, derogatory comments about them but its usually in the context of the two people having been in a relationship and there are other issues i'm dealing with like divorce, children matters, injunctions etc.
I would expect that if you felt that what was being said/the manner in which is was said etc constituted harassment (ie because they are maliciously bad mouthing you repeatedly which is causing you distress etc) then most Solicitor's would write a letter warning the other person 'to desist from such behaviour failing which will be applying to the Court for a protective Order and seeking that they are responsible for the costs of the same'. Alternatively, if you feel that it constitutes harassment then you could report it to the police which may result in the other person receiving a first harassment warning. Both these options might just get the other person to think again in the future.Proud Mummy to Leila aged 1 whole year:j0
