Hi,

What is best way to recover my USB hard drive which has my photos and MP3 files (160Gb)

I have googled different recovery software but not sure which one i need to buy. Any recomendations as my drive has 8 years worth of pics :(

The answer entirely depends on what's happened to the drive

Have the pictures been accidentally deleted? Has the drive suddenly stopped working? Has it been dropped into a vat of acid?

if you can access the drive, recuva deep scan, or diskdigger or getdataback,

if you can't access the drive on this and other pc's, you are either going to have to take the drive out of the enclose and try it internally, or if that doesn't work, pay 100's to a data recovery company

in future, keep your data on the pc, and use the usb drive for disk image backup, along with dvd's for the most important data

  • Thanks guys. I can access the drive but think i have lost the indexes (eg data still appears to be there). Whats the best one to go for? Recuva or getdataback?

  • Is it better than getdataback? Want to ensure i dont lose anything.

    Thanks

There is nothing stopping you running both, they don't write to the drive, so try the free one in deep scan mode first.

sometimes it is beneficial to bypass the usb adapter and physically connect the disk (metal block inside the case) to the sata/ide port on the motherboard as this bypasses the usb translation to disk controller in the device
