Toilet seat woe

Hi,
I'm stuck without a proper toilet seat right now and hopefully someone can give me hints on how to get myself out of this hole I dug myself!
Today I decided to replace the old toilet seat. So I popped into Homebase after measuring the existing seat. I took 1 of the bolts that's used to fix the seat to the base.
Unfortunately the bolt used on my toilet seat is smaller than all the standard size toilet seat these days. AND it's one of those sealed unit so the bolt doesn't go through the ceramic.
So I bought myself an 'easy fit' Bemis after getting a staff to show me the connectors.
Long story short. By trying to force the larger bolts down these rubber washers' I managed to push 1 of them down into the ceramic unit. Even when I did manage to screw through on the right hand side the fit is not snug.
My question is:
1. does anyone know what these 2 sided rubber washer things are called? it's a soft rubber 'cork' that let's you screw a bolt through it and hold it in place.
2. is there a better way to secure a bolt through a ceramic hole (see pic) without access to the bottom? i.e. the bolt can't go through, it needs to be held suspended by the top ceramic.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,

find a small bore rubber or soft plastic tube/pipe for the size of the hole and cut a piece off.

You need something like a Gemini seat or similar which enables fitting from the top where you can't access the under side of the pan, or you could remove the pan and retrieve the lost bits then refit the pan
