the ones ive seen with plastic inserts,
    1. you hammer in the inserts first,
    2. then you screw in the metal stud.
    3. then you place the cam (with the wooden part) over the stud.
    4. you turn/tighten the cam to lock it all together.
    Get some gorm.
  • Same problem - the pre-drilled hole for the dowel appears a snug fit, but not tight enough to retain the dowel.

However, the answer appears to be that by tightening the retaining nut - with a large amount of force - the plastic sleeving surrounding the dowel is compressed: it reduces in length but expands in diameter. It is this pressure, of plastic sleeve against the wall of the pre-drilled hole that creates the friction required to retain the dowel.

I don't like it; one retaining nut has deformed but in general it seems to work.
  • Yes, that is the answer, I should have posted back with the solution but with the need to crack on with the assembly and Christmas fast approaching I never got round to it.

Everything seems to hold together OK with the combination of wooden dowels & the 'expanded' nylon thread bit I think the overall stability relies on everything being securely fastened to each other and also the wall to avoid any twist or lateral movement during use. The doors are quite heavy MDF and constantly opening and closing them is probably the only thing that will cause movement so only time will tell whether the dowels are suitable. For the drawers which will be constantly opened and closed, the wooden dowels are glued to give extra strength.
