TV has lost signal

I'm assuming this is a problem caused by the weather, but the TV suddenly lost its signal about thirty minutes ago. We have checked the aerial that plugs into the back of the TV and that is fine. We have also checked the other two TVs in the house - they are without a signal too. My mum lives in the next street and her TV is fine, so it isn't something happening in my local area.

I'm assuming that something has happened to the external aerial. It's very cold here, but we haven't had any snow since Friday night (one very heavy snowfall - about five inches - but nothing before then either).

If I'm right, then I'll have to wait until somebody can get onto the roof and sort it out for me, so that could be a week or two.

Is there anything else I can check first, though? The aerial on the roof was new about three or four years ago, fitted by a local firm with a good reputation. The internal aerial stuff is in my daughter's room, but she hasn't touched it (she's 19, not a kiddie, and it's behind some furniture).

I have a child with special needs, and he really enjoys watching TV with us as a family. I know we can watch catch up and DVDs, but there are a couple of programmes he was really looking forward to over Christmas, so any help will be gratefully received.

might be water thats got in the aerial lead an frozen

until the morning I assume you cannot see if the aerail is upright and still pointing the same way

you mention 3 tvs from the aerial , is there some sort of amplifier/splitter you are aware of ?? that may have failed

Re the reference to an amp, we had a similar problem and unbeknown to us one of our relatives had switched power off to the amp, so no TV!

    Always worth checking.

We did lose Sky owing to the snow the other week but Freeview was fine.

Not necessarily, around here aerials can point at each other, depends where the signal is from.

A clue to your location, roughly, would allow someone to check if a transmitter is down.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Thank you both for replying. If water has got into the aerial lead, it could indeed have frozen - temperatures (according to BBC local weather) are -17 degrees at Crosby, the local weather station. I haven't looked to see if the aerial is pointing upright, and as I'm in my nightie, I don't want to go outside to look :o. I'd either freeze, or give the neighbours a shock ;)

I've no idea if we have a splitter or amplifier - I'll ask my daughter to check. She is slightly more technically minded than me.

Right, she has checked - there is no switch and the aerial thing is behind her desk, so it is awkward to get to and cannot be knocked accidentally.
