I have downloaded some american TV shows from the internet in .avi format that require Xvid codec to play. I have a DVD recorder, can I stick it onto a DVD and play on this?

It depends on your dvd player - if it can play divx then probably. If not then you would have to encode them into dvd format and record them onto a dvd using something like dvdsanta or convertxtodvd.0
