If you think it might have gone 'off' (as unlikely as that is) just sniff it and look at it carefully. Apart from being thicker, does it look different? Has the scent changed? If not, I would just water it down with water or vinegar, whichever you think best. Was it one of those 'concentrated' ones to start with?

As for why it would go thick, I can think of a few completely innocent reasons, including the cap not being screwed on properly causing evaporation, old age, separation/precipitation of the more solid bits so you used the more liquid part first, or storage in a cold place.

I also had this with Comfort! It was a fairly new bottle and had been kept in a cool dry cupboard too.

We buy the refills here - they are about 500ml and you add water to make it up to 2l. Im sure that adding water will do the trick. Lucky you - it will go way further now :-)

I bought Comfort when it was BOGOF but I only use it rarely as antistatic for underslips & tights, so I was also very peeved to find when I opened a new bottle that it had turned to a lumpy sludge. I've found it's difficult to dilute with water - doesn't dissolve the lumps properly, but I will give vinegar a go, thanks.

I know this is quite an old thread, so apologies. However, thought it would help going forward for money savers who stock up when an offer is on.

Comfort is notorious for going bad, I was looking in to this myself, and according to Unilever (makers of Comfort) yes unfortunately it does go off.

They say ideally use the bottle within 3 months of purchase, and use each bottle you buy, in order, as soon as you can for maximum freshness.

I also contacted Proctor and Gamble (the makers of Lenor) they say their softener will last 12 months.

They both say, it won't be harmful using after this time. just maybe not as brilliant results as if it were a fresh bottle.

They say if it has gone thick, then shake and water it down, if it recovers, then it is fine to use. If it does not recover or if it smells strange then best to discard it.

    HTH.
