My car which was reg SORN has been crushed, how do I notify DVLC?

Cut a long story short, I have owned a car for several years which sat in the yard of a garage my bro worked in. I register it SORN but found out a year ago the car had been crushed when the garage was sold.
How do I inform the DVLC of this as I have no proof or date the car was crushed?

Buying that old banger was the worst mistake I made a few years ago and it still haunts me!
Can anyone help.
Many thanks:j

With no v5c ( i dont) send a signed letter with reg, make, model, the date you got rid of it and who's got it now. I'll just put scrapped in the letter I think. or sorn again.
Just make the disposal date up.
Edit, I'll sorn it now then send the letter just incase it gets lost in the christmas post. At least then I'll get a reminder next year again.

Don't SORN it as this is admitting that you still have the vehicle and therefore a false declaration.

If you don't have the logbook, just send off a letter quoting reg mark, make&model, your details and date vehcile was disposed of (or approx date if unsure).

You should then get letter back from DVLA within 4 weeks confirming you are no longer the keeper.

I declare sorn on a car that i have no clue of its whereabouts. Was in the garage of a friend of
a friend, Some mention of them moving it to his brothers who lived close to me.

Then i became ill and lost contact. Not really worth anything but i keep sending the SORN off in case
someone has been doing it up as i intended.
Dont want to send it off saying its been scrapped then find out its still alive.

you making a false declaration that your still in possestion of the vehicle, as to where its address is who has it etc. you will be liable if things go wrong. i would call the dvla and explain whats happened if you still have the log book they may ask you to send it in with a letter saying you no longer have posetion of the vehicle and are not longer the registered keeper. either that or try and make an effort in finding out who has it and location so you can get the v5 signed off.

back to the OP i would suggest writing a letter explaining exactly what has happened with the car and the garage, but call and ask advice they ask you do what ive advised FORGATMYNAME. SEND RECORDED DELIVERY AS TO BE SURE THEY HAVE INFACT RECIEVED THE DOCUMENTS.
  • i regulary sorn a load of cars that im not sure where they are they are still mine and i have bits of them but i keep the log books as one day i might re shell them so i can get the number plates back. I have about enough of them to do a reshell.

i cant see anything illegal about that i have a mini but the body dropped off so i have all the interior engine and running gear and doors so when i find a new shell i can reshell it and get my private plate back

I am the registered keeper and i must declare the car SORN or TAX it, So thats what i did as the reminder
says its an offence not to.

Says .. "If you do not use or keep your vehicle on the public road you must make a SORN"

I can only presume its off the road somewhere, And as the wording above YOU DO NOT USE OR KEEP.
Well I personally have not so that is me covered, I think.

The vehicle was tax exempt so the logbook would be worth more than the car. Not going to give the log
book to naughty people who will clone the original vehicle. Possibly using a stolen car.

youve mis understood use or keep the vehicle on public highway.
use and keeping on a public highway and being the owner/keeper is different.

by sorning the car not in your possesion no longer no matter the circumstances is declairing you STILL have it, are infact as their system states, the registered keeper and the person responsable for it and this makes you making a false declaration. complications could arise from you declairing SORN and still having the V5c in your name, but if your comfy with that is what you want to do, you must be aware for the future that things could go wrong and take that on the chin.

being the registered keeper doesnt make you the owner. you acknowladge that the car is in someone else's possesion and happy with that fact, so that makes the person who'm has it now the OWNER. your the registered keeper wich makes you responsable for tickets, sorning etc i agree, but its your duty to inform change of hands and declairing scrapped etc, by you doing this and not knowing the status of the car is a risky gamble. i wouldnt let anyone be the legal owner of a car and put me down on the V5c as registered keeper as all responsability will fall to me on a car that i do not own plus i'd be making a false declaration that i had the car at my address, making a false declaration that the car was SORN at my address.

Why don't you guys tell dvla the truth?

  • Thanks guys, this has been useful. I'm going to write to the DVLA and send registered as advised (after xmas!) and tell them the limted truth as I suspect this car was scrapped a couple of years ago.

They are a tenacious bunch and I suspect I could be getting the SORN documents for another 100 years and leave this legacy to my kids!

Have a great xmas all of you and a great holiday and thanks again for the advice.
