Moving to Hull, cancelling BT contract

I restructured my BT package (phoneline, broadband, TV) this past August in order to add Sky Sports 1 and 2 to my Vision subscription. My new contract began on 02 Aug 2010. However, my circumstances have changed and I have accepted a job in Hull. I was hoping to transfer my BT account over with me but it transpires that Kingston Communications are the only ISP able to operate in Hull. It appears that I have no option but to cancel my BT account before I move.

I contacted BT about my situation and their reply is as follows:

"If you do cancel your service with BT you will be liable for cancelation charges for the remainder of your contract. I do understand that you may not be able to move your telephone service to Hull as this will more than likely have to be provided by Kingston Communication. I would suggest that maybe once your telephone service is active that your transfer your BT Broadband and Vision onto that line as this would save you having to pay a cancelation charge for those services.

I have checked the details of your account and if you ceased your BT account today you would be looking at total cease charge of around £203.09. I do think it would be a good idea to speak to Kingston Communication to see if it is possible for you to transfer over your Broadband and Vision as that cease charge is mainly made of Broadband and Vision charges."

Is it possible to transfer BT Broadband and Vision onto a Kingston Communications line? I thought you needed a BT line to use these services? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately Kingston Comms have a complete (legal) monopoly in Hull. Your internet will need to be the KC supplied Karoo service (as will be your phone) and they do not do anything like BT vision.

  • Thanks, this is what I had feared. I really don't want to pay over £200 to cancel my BT contract as I had no idea of these circumstances.

Sadly you're stuck with Karoo in Hull. I live local to Hull and I pay £35 for my broadband and £30 for my phone..sighs. We'd love to get BT here.

If you have a non-Hull relative to transfer your service onto (wich restarts the minimum term) is the only way to prevent the cost being applied. It is one of the things consumers must be aware of on their service contracts, as an enforced commitment ALWAYS will work against them.
