advise on getting a pet

  • Thank you all for your advise.

Now to start the research after christmas and get everything ready for our new pet. We have a huge garden so have to make that secure. I will get a run but know that some animals can escape even that so having the garden secure is a priority.

I have bookmarked this thread and will keep coming back to it.

Guinea pigs are very interactive and fun however they are not designed to be kept outdoors, people do keep them outside successfully but it takes a lot of time and careful management. Rabbits are better adapted to being out in our climate and as such I would recommend bunnies instead. Please remember there are lots of small animals in rescues looking for new homes.

Please please be aware that these are very small animals with minimal body fat. In the winter they need to be kept warm - I'm not sure if the garage is heated? If not then it would not be suitable. A human wouldn't like to sleep out there in winter and they'd have clothes on, these little animals have just a bit of fur but that's not much! So a nice heated winter home is needed and plenty of straw bedding. Also get 2 so they are friends, and can cuddle up at night.
