Two Cars - Seperate Policies

Can anyone clarify this for me please, I don't know if it's fronting or affects me in anyway similar to this

I currently own a car, which has my full NCB on it and protected.

I want to buy a second car, and start a new policy with 0 no claims for that one so I can take my first one off the road to do work on it.

I know you can't share NCB, nor have it cover you on more than 1 car. This is why I'm keeping all my NCB on my main car, and for the second car starting a new policy with 0 no claims
  • If in crash in 2nd car, it doesn't affect my "normal" NCB because it's a seperate policy completely, although it would most likely affect me when declaring it upon renewal of the existing policy on my primary car?
  • Can I legally do this, pay for 2 seperate policies. Build up no claims on the 2nd policy? Is it easier to go with two seperate insurers for something like this?
I'm aware of companies like Admiral but my other car insurance doesn't run out for another 8 months or so. So not really wanting to change over as of yet.

Ask your existing insurer (by phone) for a good price for the second policy - mine gave me a 40% discount when I got a second car.

Hi Admiral will insure your your 2nd car on the basis that you are going to take out another policy when the insurance on 1st car expires You take your 2nd car out for 12 months and then when your 1st one expires they time it to run out the same date as the 2nd so, after that, they both run out on the same date, so that policy only runs for 4 months ( in your example ). If you are the sole user they will also mirror the NCB from your 2nd car on to your 1st. I got 2 cars insured with them for around £350, much cheaper than I could get elsewhere and when I eventually moved elsewhere I got 2 seperate 'proofs of NCB' showing 10 years even though I had only had one of the cars for one year, so I could go elsewhere and get full NCB from two seperate companies. The only slight downer with Admiral is that you are best paying up front as their credit charges seem high.I think it was something about getting a discount for paying annually which you lose if you pay monthly as well as the interest. I went back to them this year and even though insurance prices seem to have shot up I managed to again get two cars insured for £360 and hopefully £45 cashback through quidco. One car is a 2.2dci diesel and one a 1.3 petrol. Even though it is classed as 'multicar' there are two seperate policies. I don't know the answer to your question about what happens to the other NCB if you crash one of the cars!!

As someone who has owned a classic car as well as a main one for most of the last decade...

A decent policy will match the discount on the main car. You don't get the NCB but you do get a discount equivalent to. If whoever you phone don't offer you this, phone someone else. Chris Knott have been good to me over the years.
If you have an accident on the first policy, you HAVE to declare said accident on renewal of the second policy which may alter the discount you get come renewal time. .

Why not? I've had a "daily driver" and a classic car for the weekend for most of the last decade. Its not your money so why is it your concern?

Thanks to all for the clarification

I'll enquire with my insurer if they'd cover me with this principal. I like the idea of not building up any NCB but getting a nice discount because my NCB is already protected anyway on my primary car.

As for the reason why I want two cars, the primary reason is so I have one to travel to work with whilst I carry out some major repairs on my main car.

it was is relevant question, i was going to suggest putting the first car off the road and transfering the insurance or asking for a two car policy and the reason i asked who was going to drive was also relevant as the op asks 'is it fronting'
read it properly before you answer next time:d

  • I wouldnt have thought it a problem how many policys you have as long as they are up to date and cover what you require, I have three insurance policys running for cars and two for motor bikes all are fc with full no claims, these have been running for 20 years and ive never had a claim, i had thought about a traders policy as many classic owners use them this would then allow any car to be driven, i havent tried to get a quote yet as i am not really a trader so wouldnt want a claim rejected.
I would have thought that if you do make a claim though that it would have an effect on the price of all policys you have.
  • The Admiral multicar Policy used to work out OK....
