I recently had a similar problem with an entrance door lock for a leasehold block of flats, where the Management Company had changed the lock, and then had failed to give keys to all of the Leaseholders, me being one them. The initial problem was with the lock, so the MC could have kept/used the old cylinder, thereby not requireing further keys to be cut.

As other posters have stated, check with the other occupants of the block/flats whether locks been changed, if so then use/loan a key to get spare keys cut.

The front door keys of the blocks of flats I've lived in have a code on them.

This means you cannot take them anywhere to get them cut you have to send them to a particular locksmith and it costs about £25 to get another key cut.

This is to improve security as no-one can cut loads of keys.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Sounds like they are registered security keys, so as with a block of flats i own, only by the owner/me ordering direct from the manuafacturers/Union, can spare keys be obtained.

It sounds like there is a Management Company operating the block for all the other leaseholders/owners of each flat, with possibly in the case of your flat, the leaseholder/owner renting the flat out to you, making the leaseholder/owner a landlord, the same who uses a letting agent in dealings with you, the tenant. If that is the case then your dealings should be first via the LA, then if no joy the LL.

Management company would usually put up a notice saying that locks are to be changed - also put a notice through your door.
They would probably have sent new sets to the LA or LL depending on who they deal with rather than to you. Could be that this has happened and they have not been forwarded.

Does the lock look like it's been changed? Do the key's feel like thay're sticking or not matching the lock? Not being able to get the keys in the lock sounds like it's been changed.

As mentioned all of your neighbours should either have the same problem or new keys so just ask any of them. Don't know why you're involving the LL and LA before that.
  • an update for you all =]
spoke to the neighbours and their keys didnt work either.
however the next morning and some daylight showed the fact there was half a snapped key within the lock. so the door was kept on the latch till this morning when my partner contacted the management company and they sent their maintenance guy round to fix it =]
so we can now get in and out and dont have to worry about anyone being able to walk in.
what gets me is that the management had no clue about the lock being unusable for 3 days. surely the person whos key broke should have phoned. garh i have some really useless neighbours.

But isnt the irony that their key is going to still work in this situation? :)
