My bias is towards staffy's, large dog personality in a cuddly wriggly bundle. they need as much exercise as you are willing to give them and are doting companions (and rescues are full of them). If you would prefer to stay away from the chav hound type dogs what about a schnauzer? Good luck in your search.

The sites listed below are quiz sites to help you assess what type of dog would suit your lifestyle. They are by no means perfect but may give you some ideas.

Not really thinking breed specific but have you considered an older rescue dog. They will be well over puppy and adolescent silliness so would be quieter. There is a huge demand for people to adopt older dogs so you would have a large choice and if you had one about 7years old you could still get insurance.

Many older dogs in rescues are hand ins where owners have died or have health problems and often do not do well in kennels.

a mastiff would be good, you probably think i'm mental but they don't need lots of walking, or lots of room (except to lay down) and are very loyal.

Do not mean to sound harsh but pls consider your own age too - when getting a dog, perhaps an older dog may be a better idea than a pup?

As it is now, you say you are not able to take your 2 cats when you move but will be taking on a dog, I have to say I am not quite with you on this one :
Have 2 cats 8years old now but when I move into my own bungalow to be independent cannot take them so will have a dog for "protection" and companionship
....but you are not giving any details as to why so.....you do not want to to have to rehome the dog in few years...

Perhaps OP is leaving home now therefore cannot take family cats?
Papillon would be my suggestion. I love terriers but they can be little swines, you might want something that's a bit more biddable.

I am wondering too why OP cannot take the cats, but assuming there is a good reason then my recommendations would be
a staffy, a fully grown one not a pup! they can be little bu99ers as pups but usually mature into lovely quiet dogs, but as burglar alarms or doorstep deterrents are marvellous! they also will take as much or as little exercise as you can give them (mine was quite lazy).
    or
a mongrel which the rescue staff say is quiet and sensible and can be trained to respond to sounds.
you say you have a hearing impairment - can you not apply for a 'hearing' dog? this dog would be trained to hear for you.

What about a greyhound, they tend to like to lie by the fire and do very little exercise in my experience but are freindly and good companions
