Hard Drive Fitness Test

I suspect the hard drive in an old laptop has had it. I am trying to run a hard drive fitness test on it, and it's taking an age to go through the mechanical analysis - actually I think it may have got stuck. Should it take ages, or can we safely say the hard drive is knackered?
TIA
I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Depending on the size of the drive and how comprehensive the test software is it could take quite a few hours, leave overnight.
  • I would play it safe and back everything up now.

When a hard drives dies, it dies. Word to Word, Crashes to Crashes, Dos to Dos. Rest in PC. Curtains for Windows.

    I have lost work before.

Thank you for your reply. It was supposed to be running a quick test but appears to have frozen. I will give it another try tomorrow. I'm quite resigned to having to replace the drive - it has been rather noisy for some time. Fortunately there is nothing too important on it. Been trying to decide whether it is the hard drive or the fan for a while now.

  • Hey,

It may be your PC cooling system that has issues if its making a noise. I recall a friend who's motherboard was the source of the problems, it was unable to tell the fan to keep the PC at the correct temperature.

Take ur PC to a repair shop.
