Council Tax whilst in temporary accommodation

Options
Hi,

I'm a member of the RAF who has just been on a 2 week course on another military base. I normally 'live out' at my own unit in my own mortgaged property and as such pay the normal bills. Upon returning from the course the other day I found that I have been charged with accommodation charges and CILOCT (which is basically a charge in lieu of normal council tax) for the period I spent in barrack block accommodation whilst on the course.

My question is, is it legal to be charged for council tax twice? I take immense umbridge with being charged accommodation charges while simultaneously paying a mortgage as well which I also intend to take up with my chain of command... I feel that as this is a requirement for my job that I can't refuse there is no way I should be financially penalised? Petrol used to travel there and back is duly covered separately.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

  • unfortunately yes, you are living in the block so therefore why should you not pay the accn charges and CILOCT the same as everyone else (which is only £2.50 a month or there abouts). If you lived in a qtr then you would not be charged but would still be expected to pay for food. As is usually heard throughout army life, its your choice to live out so its something you just have to live with with. sorry

Surly you £5 messing incidentals (per day) covers this small amount that you've paid.

But sadly thats life in a blue suit, dont think you will get far by taking it you chain of command, after all its your choice to life out (as pointed out above)

Some messes are getting savvy to the £5 incidentals and are now charging extra with the excuse 'You can claim it back in IE'. I can see that it won't be long that by the time everyone has had their two penneths worth you will be out of pocket when attending a course no matter how much you can claim back in IE.
  • if you were an MP you'd a been put up in a five star hotel no doubt so !!!! em claim every bloody penny you can. its a drop in the ocean to what the mod spends on crap. it doesnt effect front line resources so sod it
  • Thanks for replies,

Whether or not it is a tiny amount I think is irrelevant - basically my employer is sending me on a course for work and surely they should pay for everything?! Would I be right in thinking that as a civilian being sent on any course as part as requirement of the job there is no way they would be expected to pay for ANY element of it being food, hotel bill etc?! I can not, as any member of the forces will testify, refuse to go on the course so I have no option than to be financially disadvantaged - and just because we are in a blue suit this can not be right surely?

No, it depends on the employment contract
  • Actually after taking the matter up today it turns out that I should not have paid accommodation or CILOCT, the charges were applied incorrectly and I will be refunded both in next month's pay...

  • Yep, it's only a relatively small amount but I do a lot of courses and it's the principle of the thing....then again we're about to get hit again for more cuts so who knows, could be paying for a seat out to Afghanistan next!
