New York? Try Brooklyn...

Recently returned from New York. Stayed just North of Times Square. Hotel bill was quite something!
My advice, check out hotels in Brooklyn and stay near a metro station. Reasons for this 1) Brooklyn was nice with good bars and a great view of Manhattan, 2) You need metro to get most places even if you're slap bang in Manhattan, 3) Hotels are cheaper.
Problem? My ears would pop going under the East River.
Just a thougt anyway.
