in Credit cards
Ok I applied for a credit card and was refused I rang up and they just played me a message but gave no reason.
I don't understand why since I'm not in debt and am never in my overdraft and always pay off my credit cards. Though I did over draw one of my current accounts by accident whilst on holiday but paid in money from a different account within 24hrs (though the !!!!!!!s still charged my £30!).
I would like to check my credit rating but have already signed up to both Experian and Equifax previously. Am I still eligible for the 30 day free trials? I signed up just under 2 years ago.
Second question is I have moved within the last 2 years and though I registered on the electrol role they got my last name wrong, would this be anything to do with their refusal?
Cheers for the help.

I think if you've signed up before you can't sign up for the free trial
You can however get a statutory credit report for £2 that lets you see everything

could be something to do with your electoral role status, and the overdraw will show on your credit report but cant see that making much difference..... you wont qualify for the 30day trial, i did the same as you and have just payed £2 for statutory credit report and found something on it from 2005. well in 3 months it will be cleared off it so not gonna bother about it too much...... another factor could be that youve maybe had a few searches in a short space of time recently???0

Ok thanks for the help. It'll have to be £2 for the credit report. I've not had any searches recently just this credit card.
Next couple of questions: Will this rejection show or just the search? And: Is the statutory report easy enough to understand? Also: Is it actually worth paying for something like experian or are you throwing your money away?0 -
The rejection doesn't show just the search - however obviously if no account is set up after the search that tells its own story - ie you were rejected.
Its a while since I got the paper copy but I would imagine its the same as the online version, with account, profile and address information on it

yes they're like that

No you'll need to do a £2 job.... don't be tempted to do the free trial with the 3rd agency 'callcredit check either, they are a bunch of scammers who have a habit of disregarding their own Ts and Cs, taking your money within 30 days and being a right pain to get it back from.

Yes this is likely to seriously screw you up as electoral role check fails (which it will be due to the mismatch) can be an auto decline for many products, get it corrected.0 -
If you haven't already contacted your local council and arranged to correct the spelling of your name, I suggest you do this. We won't be able to update the electoral roll until your council has updated its records.
If when you get your credit report it's not clear why you've been refused you can contact the lender again and request a more detailed explanation. Industry guidelines require that they tell you the principle reason.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but can you clarify the guidelines please James, and if possible, give a link? I have recently been refused a Lloyds card (but miraculously offered a Halifax Clarity card 5 days later even though I don't bank with them) and have checked both my files. Lloyds refuse to give me any explanation bar the generic refusal letter and my files show they didn't credit check me!! They have given a final answer and I am in the process of a complaint with the FOS (not because of the refusal, but the lack of information).Experian_company_representative wrote: »If when you get your credit report it's not clear why you've been refused you can contact the lender again and request a more detailed explanation. It's possible they have some criteria that aren't related to credit checks.my files show they didn't credit check me!!
As a simple example a criteria could be salary > £30K.
That sort of simple criteria is usually advertised and it's a simplistic example, but you could have been turned down due to something (like income) on your form which did not warrant a credit check.
Please let us know how you get on with the information side of it.0 -
A quick check of the lending code shows that they must, if requested, provide the "main reason" for refusing a loan or overdraft application but, strangely, that requirement is not to be found in the credit card section.
You've obviously been declined on a LTSB 'policy rule', such as that mentioned by lisyloo above, which of course they're entitled to do. I suspect the FOS will find that LTSB have a right to manage their business as they see fit, and providing they haven't misled* you into checking your CRA files I can't see them finding in your favour.

Thanks for the replies guys and sorry for the slow reply.
An update. I got my £2 report and am in the process of going through it. Immediately apparent is that I'm still linked with the ex at my previous address so need to try and break this link. And I'll need to get the electrol roll thing sorted out.
I shall be contacting Halifax again and requesting a more detailed explanation of why I was turned down. I dont expect anything from them especially since I kicked up a fuss about them offering my a credit card nearly every time I logged into my online account that I'm not eligible for. The CS weren't happy when I'd finished with them. Apparently its an opt out thing but you're not told that and not given the option to do this online!0
