Replacement gutters on traditional house.

Options
Our house is a large stone semi built circa 1910. The old cast iron gutters really need replacement as we have leaks in several places and repairs just don't seem to hold. I don't think UPVC will look right on the house so I am looking for replacement traditionally styled gutters. I'm not sure if this will inviolve replacing the downpipes as well. Can anyone suggest where I can get these ? Also how much per linear metre could I expect to pay for these fitted ?

Thanks
HLK

You can still get cast iron if you really want it. Try the "Drainage Center" part of the Wolseley group of builders merchants, I know they supply various makes.

yes, the cast iron affect stuff is really good, if expensive......but worth it, as a nice old house really does look terrible with shinny round plastic on it.

Just try and find your local plastics suppier, normally in a trading estate near you

  • Hi,

I did a job about 2 months which was done by someone else tfirst They used Upvc and the leaks they had were very bad it was like someone turned a tap on when it rained.

I replaced them in fibre glass they come pre primed ready to be painted. They are the same shape as the old cast ones but much easier to handle because of the weight. They cost approx £35 for a six foot length and very easy to install.

You can also get aluminum ones which are also the same shape but a little heavier than fibre glass they cost appox £65 for a six foot length.

    hello k3v,

never seen fiberglass guttering, where did you get it? Suppose the only problem if you paint it is, more labour to paint them, and you have to then paint them every 5 years?

    Is there more advantages?

I got them from a local plumbing center by me you would have to paint them every 5-10 years though but you still have to paint cast gutters so no difference there.

There very easy to fit you dont even need unions you know were they join next doors guttering as they have joints already moulded on the end.

I would say a average size front of a house would take 30-45 minutes to fit there that easy.

With the cheap plastic gutters they tend to turn white/grey in a few years due to UV light
