    Land of Leather charge £50.

You cannot pick the furniture up, and the delivery charge has to be paid in cash to the drivers.

    Strange way of carrying on.
You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

I ordered a fitted bedroom from MFI a couple of months back - cost about £750. The fitting charge of £400-ish took the price into the next band for delivery charges, and they tried to charge me an extra tenner for delivery!!! When I pointed out their "error" to them (ie they were charging me a tenner for delivery of a fitting charge), they managed to find their way around knocking it off.

Detroit rectangular dining table, Oak veneer

looks like the right dimensions - £199 - plus extra for whatever chairs you choose

    delivery 5-10 days

    There is a delivery charge I am afraid - Its £4.85 - yes thats right - £4.85

chairs a bit pricy but you might like to buy the table and shop around for chairs

and by the way - treble points on direct sales this week

Bit of a thread revival going on here, but just thought I'd add that I went into Harveys yesterday as they had huge "10% off everything" advertisements plastered over their windows.

Found a nice entertainment unit and a nice sideboard, priced at £299 and £399, respectively. Figured I'd get them.

Sat down with the sales guy, and he went on to explain that the 10% offer doesn't apply to these particular items. I liked the furniture, so at this point I was willing to let it go. Then he pointed out the £50 delivery charge and that was the nail in the coffin.

I asked about picking up the items myself, but he said they'd have to be collected from Manchester, and that's more than an hours drive away.

Left the store without making a purchase and I agree with what has been said in this thread previously. If there's no option to collect from store, the delivery charge should be included in the price. It's not as though you can choose to have it delivered or not - there should be a big sign outside saying "remember, if you want to get your items, add £50 to all our prices."
  • cash delivery fees looks like a wangle to avoid firm paying (full) tax?

was delivery stated as extra, on the dispayed prices? it would be reasonable to expect bulky items need to be delivered, and so cost factored in already..

surely the store gets deliveries too - coud you pick up from there?

Nope, delivery wasn't displayed as extra on the price tags. It was only revealed when speaking to the salesman.

He also advised that the store doesn't get deliveries - if it had, I'd have picked it up from there. Apparantly all their stuff ships straight from a Manchester factory to the customers.

Having posted here yesterday, I had a quick Google on Harveys and found no shortage of negative comments and experiences. Think I'll be staying away.

An example of a delivery charge could be...

Ok... 2 x men on £7.50 an hour. (10 mins to load. 20 mins drive. 10 mins unload. 20 mins back)

Cost of Van Hire / Lease + Running costs inc Diesel about £15 an hour

+VAT (oh yes, Gordon likes his share) £5.25

    Equals £35.25... So not unreasonable?
  • swqeep, i bet (hope) they do more than one delivery each time,

or maybe use a courier, on a contract rate..

doing 1 del at a time is just not viable, with current fuel costs..

At the company I'm now at, we use a Luton sized van, get 2 sofas and a dining set on it and it's full!!, hence the round trips.

I had a similar discussion with a bed delivery. I simply waited until the salesman had filled out the contract, then told him to remove delivery or no deal.

    They removed the charge :)
