Setting up a Samsung N150 Plus

My 10 year old nephew is getting a Samsung N150 Plus on Christmas morning and his Mum has given it to me to make sure it is up and running for him for Christmas! BTW I know nothing about computers but a little bit more than she does!
It came with a 60 day Norton anti virus and I thought best to leave it on it although she has purchased a Norton anti virus for it, wouldn't she be best to use the free 60 days? Also how often should I set it to back up?
Is there anything I need to do to it other than basically make sure it goes online and runs Office etc?

Get rid of Norton. It will slow the computer down. It is just a waste of time and money.
Get Avast.
DanWe used to to shop at Tesco. But then we saw the light.0 -
Nothing wrong with the latest incarnations of NIS, use the free 60 days before bothering about the bought one.
BTW As the netbook has no optical drives the new version of Norton would need downloading over the interweb, info will be in the packaging.
Set the netbook to back up to what exactly?
PS If you do find NIS slowing the machine down remove using the downloadable tool from the Symantec site, and try a free one.
BTW It probably comes with a trial of MS office, OpenOffice being a free downloadable equivalent. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Avast is a great /excellent alternative to Norton -- the latter I always remove/

That is the problem I don't know what will need backed up so in the end up I let the notebook decide itself.
She has purchased MS Office so I only have to load it!0 -
You might like to try Google Chrome, its fast and leaves most of the screen free for content. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Depends what it is.
If its norton you can download a trial version and use the same activation key from the disc (remember to download the same version)
If its Office you can download the version from the microsoft website and use the product key from the disc.
What exactly is it your looking to install from a cd0 -

THANKS! I have Office installed and running. I have Norton installed and running. Now I want to leave it that he can use his new ipod and mobile with his netbook.
What I am looking to install from a cd is the cd that came with the mobile, Samsung GT-S5230, he is getting for Christmas.0 -
if you have another machine and the netbook is networked, then share the cdrom on the other other machine and run the cd install from there/Is it possible to install the content of a cd on to this netbook without an external cd player?BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON?
