Best footwear for walking in the snow

What is the best footwear to wear in the snow. Been recovering from major surgery so haven't ventured out yet. What do you recommend. I have Uggs but they are not suitable for yomping. Are Hunter Wellies any good.

Other than socks, wonder what DIY method one could use to make footwear bite the snow n ice???

    I have Dunlop Wellies/shoes/trainers/plimsolls

Not much chance of getting ice grippers as they are like gold dust and delivery issues, if avail.

Hubby said his Hunter wellies are the best he's ever had.

I've ordered 2 pairs of YakTrax Walker Traction M from Viking Direct - I don't know how quick these will come???

I wanted a bigger size for somebody but it came up out of stock at the checkout!!

Council are using sharp sand on the main road pavement which is useless!!! Side streets/roads you need to be Torville or Dean!!!!!!

I cant get on with wellies but wear my walking boots with my yaktrax on them - don't feel nervous as long as I have the ice grippers on, (can be a pain in shops and crossing the train station as they are so slippy on tiles)

I'm looking for some leg warmer type things as fed up of soggy bottoms of jeans in the snow. Maybe ski trousers would be better?

Have tried a lot of footwear in the snow and do feel best in walking boots.

I know Yeomans outdoor stores have had YakTrax in at £14.99 stores will order in for collection but they do seem like gold dust!

Not glam but the soles are great,"sticky soles" I believe they are called. Got star/sun shapes on soles.
  • I either use my walking boots with some gaiters

or my Muckboots which to be honest keep my feet warmer and are much easier to put on!

I am disabled and already unsteady on my feet so this is a real concern from me. I've bought some Get a Grip Ice Grippers from Due North, which have been in and out of stock on Amazon.
You have to pull these over your shoes, which takes some doing, but they are good. The tungsten spikes dig in to snow and ice. They are replaceable as well and my grippers came with two spare studs.

I bought some Wintertrax (similar to Yaktrax) from Sports Direct instore last week for £9.00! Wouldn't be without them now. If you have a Sports Direct locally it might be worth checking with them. The first assistant I asked about them said they didn't have any but insisted they asked someone else and finally tracked them down, hanging on the wall display behind the cash desk.

Don't know whether to go out with a pair of slip on shoes to change into when the YakTrax are not required or other method???
