Nationwide Mortgage Help for my mum

Options
Hi all

been given great help myself recently on this site unfourtantley had rather a big shock this morning

My mother has a mortgage with nationwide (£278 per month) i have a standing order set from her barclays account to her nationwide account for this amount and nationwide then internally transfer this amount to the mortgage.

Just at hers now going through her post (i should have mentioned she has severe ms and isnt able to deal with this herself anymore) and she has an arrears letter from mortgage collections......

My first thought was maybe i had set the s order to expire but no the money has still been going into the nwide current account but for some unbeknown reason they havent taken the usual internal transfer for the last 2 months.

The letter explains this amount needs to be paid immediatley and she has incurred charges, have tried to phone them but offices are closed

im very confused and looking for help and maybe an explanation?

thanks a lot anybody who tries to help

  • really strange

been looking around the online banking and can find no history of the internal transfer expiring or infact ever existing (over than on the main statement obviously)
  • any ideas on this guys

    sorry to pester
  • You should see the funds going out on the statements on the online banking page for the current account if it ever existed.
  • Wait and ring them Monday morning. You cannot do anything until you have spoken to them.

I would advise the same, advise them of the medical condition of your mother and if necessary phone CAB for help. Say to Nationwide, if they get ratty that you will take it to the newspapers if ncessary. Wouldn't look good for them harassing someone with MS.
  • Just be very prepared. Nationwide in-branch or over-the-phone will state it is the responsibility of the customer to keep up their finances, no matter what.

Although your mum has MS, they have legally carried out their part by sending out legal notification via letter.

As above, you must now seek to deal with this straight away. I would always suggest you to carry out the following:

    (1) You must phone up and explain the situation.
    (2) Always follow this up with a letter.
    (3) It may be sensible as above to go to CAB for help too.

Just to confirm something of the above? Why have you set up a standing order and not a direct debit transaction?

Why transfer one monies to one bank account to another bank account for the mortgage to be taking out? You need to simplify this process asap.

    Good luck.

PS. You will find that if you submit a complaint! You will get even further!
Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

Remember to say thank you to people who help you out!

  • thanks for replies

to add a bit more background to this i originally switched my mums banking from nwide to barclays as it is easier for me to keep an eye on her accounts e.t.c

at the time the mortgage payment was coming out via an internal transfer from her current account at nationwide, and after contacting nwide i couldnt seem to find a way of cancelling this payment....

The payments have been going out fine for 3 years or so since i switched the account until the last 2 months the internal transfer has stopped for an unknown reason

    all very strange

Rather OTT in the circumstances and in essence totally unneccesary.

Then it would appear that the transfer has been cancelled.

Ring the Nationwide on Monday and explain the situation fully. Arrange for an immediate payment of the arrears. ( I assume the funds are still sitting in the account?). In view of the circumstances ask that any late penalty charges be cancelled on this occassion.

Also set up a direct debit from the Barclays account to meet the future mortgage payments. So you can ensure that it doesn't happen again.
  • that sounds ideal thrug

i think some earluier posters got the wrong end of the stick dont need to involve cab as the funds are sitting in the nwide current account as ever hence why i wasnt aware of the problem

    thanks again
