How to best restore after back up

I had to restore my hard drive to factory settings after windows went into a start up loop and would not start.
I copied the C drive to a remote hard drive.
What is the best way to transfer everything back??
Copy paste everything... just some stuff?????

If the backup was done without imaging software then a simple copy/paste of docs will suffice. In future, if at all possible, imaging is ideal and this is free/
