Hold on a mo. It may not actually be the screen. Plug in an external monitor. If you get the same problem, its new mainboard time.0

Thank yo for your replies, i have found a local company who have said it may be the graphics card, will be taking it to them monday. They are saying it will costy £60 for the graphics card, or between £45-90 for a new screen.0

What make is your PC and how old is it?
I have a 2 1/2 year old Vaio which developed a 'scrambled' screen. Sony replaced the mainboard free of charge as it was caused by a faulty graphics card. Apparently the graphics card is guaranteed for four years.0 -
Yes there was a problem discovered with the solder used to attach the graphic cards to the motherboard. After many heat/cool cycles it starts to crack and distort the signal, this was a design flaw on nVidia's part and affects Geforce 8/9 graphic cards.
Check your manufacture for a BIOS update, many released one to keep the graphics card cooler and reduce the impact of heat/cool cycles.0 -
Open your laptop again and check the cable that goes to the screen isn't damaged or loose.0

It had nothing to do with the solder and everything to do with substandard materials used in the manufacture of the GPU and it only affects Geforce 8x00 series, not the 9x00 series.0 -

..which has an ATi onboard graphics chip (built into the motherboard) so I'm assuming the £60 is component-level chip replacement? That's pretty cheap!
To my mind, it sounds like the LCD panel is faulty, but can't confirm without seeing the exact fault.IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer
