PVA as sealer question

Hi, I have a brick fireplace that I'm going to paint but need to seal it first. Does anyone know the ratio's for using PVA? I think it needs mixed with water and white spirit but I'm not sure. Googling doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere!

Any help would be appreciated.
