Firewall problem

Hi MSE Techies,
I've just turned my pc on to happily surf the aternoon away and i received a Windows Security Alert in the task bar saying that my firewall is not on...eek!! and according to Security Centre my Firewall is also off
I use Zonealarm. I've checked and it says that my Firewall is up to date, now I'm confused. Could someone please throw some light on the matter??

  • Control Panel - Security Centre. Click Firewall at the top. It should say Zone Alarm is on. Then click Windows Firewall under Manage security settings. The Off (not recommended) option should be selected, so you're not running 2 firewalls.

It may be up to date but is it actually running? Start, Programs, Zone Labs, Zone Labs Security.

Chippy_Minton: In Security Centre it says that Zonealarm reports that it is turned off. The 'off' option has been selected under Windows Firewall > Manage security settings

espresso: Under the 'Overview' option it says that Firewall is up to date on the right, is that what I'm looking for?

It sounds like it is running. If you right click on the ZA icon in the system tray, is there and option to Shutdown Zone Alarm? If it is running, I don't know what you are getting this warning. May sort itself out next time.

Yes there is. Also, when I select the ' Anti virus monitoring' option in ZA it says that there is no antivirus on my computer that Zonelabs can detect  I use AVG. Have checked it and it's fine.

I've tried restarting and still the same problem

I would uncheck the Anti-virus monitoring box in ZA as I'm sure that I've read that it does not work with all anti-virus programs. I don't really se the point of these programs checking each other!

It sounds like ZA firewall is running. The message about no antivirus is misleading because ZA doesn't detect another company's AV product - they want you to buy their own AV instead.

You can turn off the Windows warning about the firewall not being on. In Security Centre, on the left side click 'Change the way security centre alerts me' and untick the firewall option.

It makes sense, I never thought about it that way. It just gets one worried all for nothing!!

Thanks i've done that and the security icon has finally disappeared from my taskbar.

What would i do without the techies at MSE?!

    Thanks espresso and Chippy_Minton
  • If you are happy that ZA and AVG are running correctly just disable the Security Center by going to Start, Run, type in services, scroll down to Security Center, right click and under Properties select Disable.
