Could have borrowed your neighbours key.

I still have the key, what I don't have is the triangle inside the lock for the key to grasp.

I took the advice of the posters yesterday and wedged a screwdriver in and prized it open. The lock is broken but the outer of the box is still intact.

In that case, instead of breaking the door, I would have tried drilling into the remaining plastic using a 5mm drill and using something to turn it open like a large diameter woodscrew for example.

The one on our house has a metal triangle/lock and metal key

Be careful drilling without a mask as some of those older doors are made of asbestos
  • i had the same problem, we moved house and the boxes were dreadful! got myself a new door and lock mechanism online for under £15 delivered. Lock was a couple of pounds so if its just the lock you need then definitly worth getting the part instead of having it look a state! lol! easy to fit too by the way, lock pushes in and clips together and the door has those squeezy springy hinges so it just clips in. job done!
  • We had a leaking gas meter, and when Transco came to replace it he just pulled the bottom of the box out toward him and lifted upwards and the box came apart. Ours is in two parts, one where the meter is actually bigger than the door opening, but to look at it you'd never have known it came apart!! Now when the door freezes I just open it this way.

thats if its a "surface mounted" box, the ones which are stuck into the wall are all one box.
