Canon G3 error message 999?

Hi
I have a Canon G3 digital camera. I upgraded to something else ages ago but only just getting around to putting the G3 on Ebay.
I remembered this week one problem with it.
On the LCD display on the top of the camera, there is a section which tells you how many shots you have left, based on the size of the CF card, etc.
On my G3 this works fine UNLESS it is in 'auto' mode, in which case it always says 999.
I tried explaining this to the Canon helpline but due to language difficulties I don't think they understood.
A guy in our local camera shop reckons the '999' is an error message but didn't know any more than that.
Anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks

Great input, thanks so much for that. I have tried that but as their offshore call centre can barely string together a sentence of English that isn't really much help.0

I know this might be obvious and you have probably tried it, but have you changed the card to see whether that makes a difference?
I can't find anything on the internet about this. You can ask Canon through their website and I suspect this might be more fruitful than the helpline.0 -
Yep have tried two different CF cards, different makes, different sizes, factory resets etc. Will try contacting online. Cheers0
