Credit Card application gone to 'underwriters'?

Went into Halifax today to apply for the Halifax Reward Clarity credit card.

I have recently opened a normal Reward bank account with Halifax so it seemed to make sense to go with them for the bonuses.

I'm 24, and have never had a credit card before. During the application it went for approval, and the attendant had to call someone for a yes or no. But apparently the person on the phone couldn't make a decision and some other 'underwriter' has to look at my application to decide - could take up to 5 days!

Anyone heard of this before and does it usually end in a 'no'? What are they doing?

Thanks
Jim

That is normal....they will look onto your application into more details and scrutinise your credit file. It could go either ways....
  • The underwriters assess whether or not you are a good risk to extend credit to. With no previous cards and only a recent history with the Halifax the computer couldn't decide by itself, and I'd guess the people available didn't have the authority, so your application has been referred on to a real person to make the decision. It could go either way.
  • If you been with Halifax a long time and have an account that is in good standing chances are you will get a card but with a low credit limit
