I lived in a Childrens' Home from the age of six to ten and we had the most wonderful Christmas's with plenty of presents donated from organizations. I loved my Childrens' Home so much that when I was fostered I ran away trying to get back there!
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

Have you ever thought of adoption there are many children out there who need safe loving homes. It takes a long time but it is worth it.

Whilst not quite the same as "taking in orphans" (which has a slightly disturbing Dickensian feel to it, IMHO), Host UK offer something similar for international students in the UK, many of whom are here for a full year or more and can't afford to fly back home for the winter holidays (and many of their friends and flatmates will have gone back to parents, leaving halls or residences etc. uncomfortably quiet).
