I agree with Nigbob, I was thoroughly disappointed in Rome and absolutely loved Florence and surrounding areas. BUT, I think its a down to personal preference and sadly you have to try these places first to make your own minds up. Personally I felt I was wasting x amount of days in Rome once I realised it wasn't my cup of tea (coffee).

Some people don't like Florence, which amazes me, but then I amaze people in not being a fan of Rome.

If you do go to Rome do some research (Trip Advisor) and visit the fountain gardens at Tivoli - its stunning and I have never seen negative reviews of it.

http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/hotels/list.asp?r=Rome some good ideas on here, I use them all the time.

I would give Florence a miss and go to Venice personally, but we are all different.

What's sad about having to try places to find out whether you like them? I did a trip like this a few years ago. Flew into Pisa and spent one night there, took a train to Rome and stayed there for 3 nights, then another train to Florence for a 4 night stay and flew back from there. I didn't feel that was enough time to see everything I wanted to in Rome or in Florence, but it was a good taster and you can always go back another time to a place you liked.
