Hello, I've never had a credit card and I think it's time to get one!
I don't have any debts or anything like that, I purely want one to build my credit rating, get purchase guaranties, and hopefully get a few nice bonuses while I'm doing it
I have a Halifax Reward account as my main bank account, so would getting the Halifax credit card be a good shout?
I just want to know what the best card for me would be for free stuff, be that money or vouchers/flights
Thanks!
Jim

Best to try your own bank first....if they say no as you've never had any credit card before then it would be very difficult for you getting one from a mainstream lender, but you never know....other than that then you would have to fall back on cards like Vanquis, Capital One, Aqua or Barclaycard Initial....but you won't get any free stuff with them0

Hm.. is it really that hard to get a credit card?
My credit rating is good, and I have savings, so I was just assuming I'd be able to jump in on a mid-tier credit card with good bonuses.
If not, I think my bank (Halifax) offer £5 a month if you spend £300, or something...
Any other suggestions?0 -
Your credit rating means absolutely nothing...each lenders have their own criteria...your saving neither, unless Halifax decide to take that into consideration but I doubt it. That does not mean that you'll get declined by a mainstream lender but you will find it very difficult simply because you have no or very little history in terms of managing credit cards or loans....0

Thanks for the knowledge.
So how do people ever get on the ladder? Or is this one of the problems?
Looks like I'll just be hitting Halifax up then for their Reward Clarity card.
Thank you !

I'd seriously recommend the Barclaycard Initial, great first card and it comes with a sensible credit limit too.0

They get on the ladder by starting with a sub-prime cards like the ones I've mentioned earlier....but everyone situation is different. Talking about myself I've never had to have a sub-prime card in my life...0
