USB ports not recognising devices

Hi Guys
Could anyone help me please??? I have plugged my iPod into the computer this morning and a warning has come up saying that the computer does not recognise the device, to try re-plugging it in and if not to buy a new device as that one has malfunctioned! I thought there was something wrong with the iPod but it is also doing it now to my memory stick.
The latest version of my PhD thesis is on my memory stick and I badly need the computer to recognise it. I have tried all of my USB ports and they are all saying the same thing.
Can anyone advise me what to do at all?

I have this problem on my computer at work and I can't find out the cause. On mine though it will still see my Dell memory stick but not my external hard drive or the new memory stick I bought. I have googled the cause and the fix suggested is to power down the pc and pull out the power cable. Leave it a short time and then plug it back in. This did not work for me but it might be worth you trying it.
I know it is not my drive and stick at fault because they work on other machines.0 -
Someone on one of the newsgroups to which I am subscribed suggested not only closing down my computer but also switching it off at the mains socket. Seemingly this allows any residual current on the motherboard or any stray capacitance to discharge.
Believe it or not it worked! I now have all my USB ports and devices working as I want them.
I have nothing better to do!!!!

Um, I think that is what I said.
Unfortunately it didn't work for me but I might give it another go when I am next in.0 -

Not really as you said "pulling out the power cord" which disconnects the connection to ground.
Shut down computer.
Switch off the power at the mains wall socket.
Hold in the power button on the front of the computer or 1 minute.
Switch on the power and boot-up.
Worth a try as it does work on some machines. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
